To become an Energy Advisor, candidates must complete the following steps:

  3. Complete 6 probationary energy audits with any NRCan licensed service organization (2 observed, 2 solo, 2 supervised)

  • Do I need to have a specific educational or work background to become a Registered Energy Advisor?
    No previous experience or skills are required to become a Registered Energy Advisor. To become a Registered Energy Advisor, candidates must complete the following steps: 1. Pass the NRCan Foundation Level Exam 2. Pass the NRCan Energy Advisor (House) Exam 3. Complete 6 probationary energy audits with any NRCan licensed service organization (2 observed, 2 solo, 2 supervised) 4.   • How long does it take to complete the training to become an Energy Advisor?
    It takes approximately 3 months to complete all studying, exams, and probationary energy audits if you dedicate yourself to it on a full-time basis. Or approximately 600 hours in total. Studying can also be completed on part-time basis (e.g. evenings and weekends).
  • What does a Registered Energy Advisor need to operate?
    Energy Advisors require the following, at a minimum, to operate: · Blower door kit (gauge, frame and fan) · Ladder · Tools (flashlights, screwdrivers, toolbelt, measuring tools, etc) · Face mask or half-mask respirator · Cell phone and data plan · Computer with Windows operating system (HOT2000 only works on Windows) · Internet access · Printer · Business insurance (independent contractors only) · Reliable vehicle with valid driver’s license, a good driving record and insurance.
  • How much do Registered Energy Advisors get paid?
    Registered Energy Advisors can work either as employees or be self-employed (independent contractors). Most Energy Advisors are self-employed. Energy Advisors working as employees are typically paid an hourly rate or a salary, which can vary based on region and company. Full-time Energy Advisors working as independent contractors can make $75,000 to $100,000 per year. Part-time Energy Advisors working as independent contractors can make $25,000 to $45,000 per year. Energy Advisor compensation for independent contractors is typically paid per energy audit with the service organization keeping approximately 40% of what is charged to the client and the Energy Advisor keeping approximately 60%. The more energy audits you complete, the more money you make. As independent contractors, the amount of work an Energy Advisor receives depends on: · How frequently they choose to complete energy audits. · The relationships they build with contractors, real estate agents, builders, renovators and service organizations. to generate leads for themselves.

  • Is there a demand for Registered Energy Advisors in Canada?
    With the acceleration of the clean energy transition underway, Registered Energy Advisors are in demand across Canada. There are numerous home energy retrofit rebate and loan programs available federally, provincially and municipally across Canada, including the Canada Greener Homes Loan, that require homeowners to complete an EnerGuide home energy audit to participate. An Energy Advisor’s ability to generate energy audit leads is dependent on the relationships they build with contractors, real estate agents, builders, renovators and service organizations.

  • What does a Registered Energy Advisor do?
    A Registered Energy Advisor is licensed by Natural Resources Canada to conduct home energy audits in Canada using the EnerGuide Rating System. Energy Advisors conduct energy audits of residential buildings, provide expert advice to homeowners about making energy retrofits to their homes, collect data onsite according to NRCan procedures, perform energy modelling using HOT2000 software and develop custom reports with impartial upgrade recommendations to help homeowners save energy, improve comfort and reduce GHG emissions. Energy Advisors also provide homeowners with guidance on how to access available rebates and loans to help offset the upfront costs of home energy retrofits.​
  • What is the cost to get setup as a Registered Energy Advisor?
    Registered Energy Advisors can work either as employees or be self-employed (independent contractors). However, most Energy Advisors are self-employed. Energy Advisors working as employees are typically paid an hourly rate or a salary, which can vary based on region and company. If the Energy Advisor is working as an employee, equipment and tools may be paid for by the employer. Full-time Energy Advisors working as independent contractors can make $75,000 to $100,000 per year. Part-time Energy Advisors working as independent contractors can make $25,000 to $45,000 per year. The potential expenses to get set up as an Energy Advisor (independent contractor) including training courses, exams, probationary energy audits and tools and equipment is approximately $10,000 (excludes vehicle, computer and cell phone expenses). As an independent contractor, these are business expenses paid for by the Energy Advisor.

    This is an online course designed to assist you in the completion of your probationary energy audits. However, it does not include on-site supervision of your probationary energy audits or review and feedback on your probationary energy audits. You need to find another NRCan licensed service organization to complete this service. However, this course will help you complete your probationary energy audits faster and with fewer errors and act as an essential reference resource when you start your career as an Energy Advisor, helping you to manage a higher volume of energy audits.

What Energy Advisors Do

An Energy Advisor is licensed by Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) to conduct home energy audits in Canada using the EnerGuide Rating System. 

 

The EnerGuide Rating System is a nationally recognized rating standard that provides homeowners with customized information about the energy performance of their homes.

Energy Advisors conduct energy audits of residential buildings, collect data according to NRCan procedures, perform energy modelling using HOT2000 software and develop custom reports with impartial upgrade recommendations to help homeowners save energy, improve comfort and reduce GHG emissions.
